Kino London Are 50!

Believe it or not, Kino London are approaching their 50th screening.

That’s 50 unprogrammed, un-curated, unexpected screenings! They’re not quite sure how they managed to go from one screening to the next with nothing (that’s nothing) programmed, and still end up with a full house each night, but they did! Long may it continue.

Join them for a special birthday screening at the Horse Hospital on Wednesday 8th May. They can guarantee balloons, popcorn, birthday treats and a bumper screening list of shorts, all introduced by their ma…kers.

WANT TO SCREEN AT KINO #50?

As always, filmmakers register in advance to screen their short at each event, sight unseen. There are no themes, no pre-selection and no restrictions, other than:

– films must be under 6 minutes
– films must be on DVD
– films must include the Kino logo + screening number (50) at the end, just for our screening
– the filmmaker must present the film in person.

Screening slots are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. If you’d like to screen your short drop them a line ASAP at screen@kinolondon.com They’ll need your name, the title and duration of your film, along with your contact details.

WANT TO MAKE FILMS WITH THEM?

Alongside the open-mic shorts you’ll see the results of the Kino Challenge film awarded at Kino #49 (‘Pigeons know things’) and there’ll be the chance – as always – to participate in the new session of Challenge filmmaking that will be happening in the month running up to Kino #51.

If you’ve never made a short, or are stuck for an idea, or just want to work with new people, the Kino Challenge is a great way to get those filmmaking juices flowing.

********************************************************************************

(PS. … Kino is always a busy one, and the Horse Hospital has a limited capacity of around 100 plus a few standing. Once they’re full they’re full! As you know, they are first-come, first-served with Kino, so all screening filmmakers are requested to arrive early – around 7:30pm/7:40pm to ensure entrance. Thanks!)

WAYout Wants You!

WAYout are a charity working in West Africa and the UK, running film, media and music programmes to engage street homeless children and youth, get them off the streets and into education or employment – and they are now desparately looking for donations of old or second-hand film and recording equipment and IT. These really range from Macs, cameras to HDV tapes and small headphones.

They have been running these projects since 2007, which have won awards and been hugely successful in engaging and supporting over 1,500 youth in that time. In May 2012, they opened their first WAYout Hub/studio, supported by the Strummerville Foundation, which has engaged with over 350 street youth in its first 6 months. But – THEY NEED YOUR HELP!

They have previously been fortunate enough to gain donations of G4 Macs, cameras and equipment from Southbank University, Princess Productions amongst others. But most of this equipment they have – Macs, studio equipment, cameras, tripods, sound equipment – they have had since 2007, was its self second-hand and, following a lot of wear and tear in Sierra Leone, is now on its last legs. They are desperately looking for new second-hand equipment – can you help?

Below is a list of priority items they are hoping to get – but, in short, any film, music and IT equipment would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to know more about our projects and work, please do visit www.wayoutarts.org, which includes some of their award-winning short films and music videos (made by the street youth).

Unfortunately, they will not be able to take anything that isn’t working, as they can not get things repaired out in Sierra Leone. But if you do have anything, please do let them know – either by emailing theWAYout email (info@wayoutarts.org) or by calling direct on 07939254610.

Priority items

Macs able to run Final Cut Pro studio, Logic, Reason, and other music programs – laptops or stack
Cameras- they can use pretty much anything and know its the person who makes the good film, not the camera – so as long as they are decent and record on to a format they can still buy- so, pretty much any cameras.
Lights (they don’t have any, so both little portable ones or for the studio)
Mics, especially rifle mics and boom pole but radio mics too.
Tripods – preferably with fluid head but definitely strong enough for a Z1 type camera
Headphones
Small HDV tapes

ALSO – if you’re interested in volunteering with WAYout, do get in touch!

Big thanks in advance, they look forward to hearing from you.

Exclusive Interview with Lynne Paris, Writer and Director of AH Men
Q:-This must have been a traumatic experience for you. What made you tell your story publicly?
A:- I was asked to, and because I know how isolated wives of transexuals can feel I decided to go public to reach out and support other women who find themselves in my position. To give them hope and self respect back.
Q:- How do you plan to support wives?
A:- I’ve developed a Helpline network of Counsellors , Relationship Coaches and spiritual resource which will make sense of what has happened to them. It’s a time of growth and transition for wives as well to reach their full potential. It’s hard for women, if their husband wants a sex change, to understand that they can also revolutionise their lives – have their own transition, in a way.
Q :- But surely a wife can refuse to agree to her husband having a sex change unless she feels comfortable with the idea?
A:- You’d expect so, but legislation was passed in Europe making it unnecessary for a man to have the consent of his wife before he has a sex change. A man can be a long way down the treatment route without his wife even knowing. What happened to me could happen to any woman.
Q: How can women access the Helpline?
A:- Details will shortly be published on the AH Men website www.ahmen.co.uk
Q: What are your plans for AH Men?
A:- AH Men is attracting attention from many Diversity Groups, at home and abroad because it explores issues around The Equality Act and Protected Characteristics in a uniquely insightful and humorous way. We’ve received a couple of enquiries about making a film. I guess we’ll just see what comes along.
