Lighthouse is pleased to announce that the BFI Shorts 2012 scheme is now open for applications. BFI Shorts 2012 is an exciting new UK-wide short film production initiative which will support up to 20 live-action fiction projects with budgets ranging from £25,000 to £50,000. They are looking for a diverse slate of films that tell compelling stories and have the ability to engage, inspire and entertain audiences. They are now accepting applications from directors, writers and producers who have a track record of making work which demonstrates a distinct voice and strong storytelling ability. The scheme welcomes submissions from talent working across a wide variety of creative disciplines, including film, TV drama, theatre, online drama, commercials, documentaries and artists’ film and video. The deadline for applications is 5pm, Friday 23 March 2012. Last Shop Standing – Whatever Happened To Record Shops

Not long ago there was a record shop on every high street, but over 500 independent record stores have closed during the last few years. But record shops were always more than retail outlets. They are part of our culture; they support new bands and local talent. A place for musicians and music fans to congregate, to browse away a few hours, to walk away with music they didn’t know existed. Last Shop Standing is a collaboration between award wining feature film company Blue Hippo Media www.bluehippomedia.com and Proper Music Publishing Ltd. Based on the successful book by the same name, Last Shop Standing will be a 60-minute documentary to be released on Record Store Day in April 2012. It will be a celebration of the unique spirit of comradeship and entrepreneurial ingenuity that has enabled so many shops to keep operating successfully against the backdrop of massive changes in the music industry, the biggest recession in years, the growth of online file sharing, and the explosion of choice in music consumption. They are looking to raise an initial $15,000 [just under 10,000] to get filming completed and will be filming with a small crew over a 2 week period in over 17 locations across England, Scotland and Wales. Next Kino London Event Coming Soon

The next Kino London event will be coming up in February with another collection of great shorts. There are no themes and no pre-selection of the films they show. They ask only that films be under 6 minutes, on dvd, and include the Kino London logo (just for the screening). They also stipulate that the filmmaker should be there on the night, of course,… to stand up and say “Hi, I made this!” If you’d like to screen drop Laura a line at screen@kinolondon.com. Following the success of last year’s TIME OUT CRITICS CHOICE, five star, sell out production of the Shakespeare rediscovery DOUBLE FALSHOOD, award winning director Phil Willmott blows the dust off the bard’s unjustly neglected historical thriller. Combining the sweep of Henry V, the pitch black humour of Richard III, and all the court intrigue of Elsinore, King John is the story of a desperate monarch who’ll stop at nothing – lies, murder, even outright war – to strengthen his weakening grip on the kingdoms of England and France. At first battling with blow up dolls, and getting to grips with some of the vibrating merchandise, he soon realises that not only has he become a victim of a high pressured sales operation (with a gangster like supplier), but his neighbourhood is very conservative and inhabited by an ageing population. Slowly though, he starts to win them over and unites the community, but will he convert enough of them to customers to pay off the gangsters? Kino Shorts is back for the first event of the year at the Black Lion on Wed 18th January. Just over the border from Manchester. The venue is just 12 minutes walk from Piccadilly Gardens, 5 minutes from Victoria train station or just 2 minutes walk from Deansgate (across …from the bottom of Market Street/St Mary’s Gate). As usual, they’ll be showing Short films essentially from Manchester, Salford and the North West but not entirely in this session. Their nights promote emerging filmmakers both locally and from the North West and also encourage debate and networking. Each short film, where possible, will be followed by a discussion with the director / producer / writer of the film (and cast members when available). There will be a break midway to refresh those glasses and a fab networking session afterwards till midnight. Networking is always an essential part of the Kino Shorts night. Be there or be nowhere. They are linked to a major investment bank and work with the principle of the banks investment banking in the City. These funds are otherwise not accessable to other film makers One other important thing to know is that they only consider full length feature films. They currently have six films they are shooting and funding.
