WAYout Wants You!

WAYout are a charity working in West Africa and the UK, running film, media and music programmes to engage street homeless children and youth, get them off the streets and into education or employment – and they are now desparately looking for donations of old or second-hand film and recording equipment and IT. These really range from Macs, cameras to HDV tapes and small headphones.

They have been running these projects since 2007, which have won awards and been hugely successful in engaging and supporting over 1,500 youth in that time. In May 2012, they opened their first WAYout Hub/studio, supported by the Strummerville Foundation, which has engaged with over 350 street youth in its first 6 months. But – THEY NEED YOUR HELP!

They have previously been fortunate enough to gain donations of G4 Macs, cameras and equipment from Southbank University, Princess Productions amongst others. But most of this equipment they have – Macs, studio equipment, cameras, tripods, sound equipment – they have had since 2007, was its self second-hand and, following a lot of wear and tear in Sierra Leone, is now on its last legs. They are desperately looking for new second-hand equipment – can you help?

Below is a list of priority items they are hoping to get – but, in short, any film, music and IT equipment would be greatly appreciated. Priority items

Macs able to run Final Cut Pro studio, Logic, Reason, and other music programs – laptops or stack
Cameras- they can use pretty much anything and know its the person who makes the good film, not the camera – so as long as they are decent and record on to a format they can still buy- so, pretty much any cameras.
Lights (they don’t have any, so both little portable ones or for the studio)
Mics, especially rifle mics and boom pole but radio mics too.
Tripods – preferably with fluid head but definitely strong enough for a Z1 type camera
Headphones
Small HDV tapes

Kino Presents The Wheel: Manchester, Birthplace Of Northern Soul

Kino is proud to present a special screening of the documentary film about the history of The Twisted Wheel night club in Manchester, world famous for its links to the birth of Northern Soul music and at the heart of the Northern Soul scene.

“The Wheel”, produced by ZB Films/TWRF4 is a 2 pt documentary film about what was once a small back street Soul Club in Manchester, which started a phenomenon which spread right around the world. This is a story about how the Northern Soul scene started and how it evol…ved.

It will tell you how it influenced generations of youngsters lives, including musicians, dj’s, promoters and YOU the dancers, Soulmods, who, even after 50 years, still hold it close to their hearts.

This film will take you back to your youth…Even if you only started on the scene recently, it will astound you, fill your heart with joy and have you dancing in your seats.

Encounters Early Deadline This Week

A gateway to the world’s major short film and animation awards (Academy Awards®, BAFTA, European Film Awards, Cartoon d’Or), Encounters is one of the best-known international competitive showcases of its kind for emerging talent and is renowned for its networking opportunities. Encounters returns to Bristol harbourside from 17-22 September 2013.

Yellobric Launches Short Weekend

A 48HR SHORT FILM COMPETITION FOR AMATEUR FILM MAKERS, JUDGED BY INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS

* Filmmakers, audiences and charity partners come together to create spontaneous short productions.

* Applications open to anyone with a camera and editing software

* All proceeds go to providing digital educational materials to developing world schools

London, UK – 22th March – Screening on the 26th May (filming from 24th May) at Genesis Cinema, Mile End. Short Weekend will see filmmakers from across London and the developing world create some of the most off-centre productions this year. The short films will reach across the globe – anyone, anywhere can enter and be part of London’s underground film scene.

London’s talented filmmakers will be set against entrants from Yellobric’s partners across sub-Saharan Africa and the event will be streamed live on the web. Since 2011 Yellobric has been providing educational digital content to developing world schools. This event will bring these very different environments to London and join communities across thousands of miles using the power of the web. Industry professionals will judge the event and the winner will receive film-making hardware.

Gavin Paterson, founder and director of Yellobric, said: “Short Weekend will unite filmmakers and audiences, donors and students. They will be able to interact in a creative mêlée and peek into each other’s lives.”

Short Weekend is about creating a dialogue between people all over the world. The event will be a chance for Londoners and developing world students to reflect on the dichotomy of their situations and set into context the tremendously important work Yellobric is doing. It will be a celebration of globalism, technology and the Internet and what they could mean for global development.

Behind The Scenes Of Total Hell – Launches 22nd April

Behind the Scenes of TOTAL HELL is a feature length mockumentary about a film production, gone wrong. The film follows hapless, egocentric film director “Jamie Gunn” and friends through their filmmaking exploits. The brainchild of filmmaker Andy Wilton, a promos director from the North East of England. The film is based on many of the incidents and bizzarities Andy had witnessed, suffered and caused within the industry. “Behind the Scenes of TOTAL HELL” will be launched free online on April 22nd.  You can see the trailer here

News About Rushes Soho Shorts 2013

For many years we have helped spread the word about Rushes Soho Shorts, an excellent short film festival held every year in London. Unfortunately, there won’t be one this year and we wanted to forward on their message on this and to thank them for some great films and events.

“Sadly we have to announce that we will not be holding RSSF 2013. The festival has been a passionate commitment for 14 years; the decision has not been easy to make. We sincerely THANK YOU for your support, for entering your films, for coming to our screenings and events. We’ve had a huge amount of fun meeting everyone over the years and truly appreciate all the films that have been entered for consideration – whether shortlisted or not. Having had the opportunity to see everyone’s work has been a huge privilege and biggest highlight of our year, each year. We want to keep our festival family together. While the festival is discontinued the social media sites will remain – continuing to promote news, screenings and events from the short film world and the festival community.
