Manchester’s Vintage Kino 3 – Free Cinema Movement

Free CinemaCheck in to Kino’s third appearance at The Three Minute Theatre, Aflecks Arcade, Oldham Street, M1 1JG. As part of the Afleck’s Fringe Theatre Festival they present their third Vintage 16mm Shorts show. This month they have a very special presentation of a documentary feature and a Safety at Work film, both on wonderful 16mm celluloid. NO digital at Vintage Kino. Unique films with a difference that you won’t see anywhere else.

They promise you won’t be disappointed. Even come in vintage dress to suit if you so wish (not obligatory but feel free to dress as you wish to suit the ambiance of the night).

This month’s programme includes a very rare early short called “SURVIVAL”. A 20 minute film about safety at work as a worker has a serious accident on a construction site. The film is probably late 50s and examines then how health and safety in the building trade were at the time very poor.

Their star attraction is the 1958 documentary sponsored by the Ford Motor Company and made as part of the Free Cinema Movement, the film is: “WE ARE THE LAMBETH BOYS”. A Seminal piece of documentary film by New Wave director Karel Reisz follows the daily activities of members of the Lambeth Youth club in late 1950’s London.

It’s a really fascinating piece of history and great for a look life in late 50s London for the Lambeth Boys.

They will also have a Pathe News Reel reviewing the year of 1958.

Doors open at 7.30 to give you time to relax and get in the mood to some vintage music and drinks will be served by the delightful Gina (proprietor of this fine establishment).

To complement the films this month they will have two live acts as part of the Afleck’s Fringe Festival playing either side of the films and the first act will be on shortly after .7.30.

Tickets: Just £3.00 on the door (unfortunately, they don’t accept vintage coins or notes!)

Programme starts at 7.45 – ish and there will be an intermission half way. Expect FREE ICE CREAM in the intermission and the whirl of the projector in the background.
