Kino 53 Coming Soon

Anyone who went to either of the last two Kino screenings will testify: their new venue, Electrowerz, is pretty damn cool. When not hosting the likes of our oh-so-fabulous film night, they make ends meet by showcasing buzzworthy bands like Theme Park, Youth Lagoon, and Braids, and are the venue of choice for hipster weddings. So demand is high, making an early August date difficult to obtain. They thought you’d prefer to spend those days desperately soaking up what’s left of this almighty heatwave anyway, and have …opted to host the fifty-third installment of Kino London slightly later this month, on the 20th August, when they can expect a respectable 18°C – pretty damn cool. Join them for a short film night like no other in London. WANT TO SCREEN AT KINO #53? As always, filmmakers register in advance to screen their short at each event, sight unseen. There are no themes, no pre-selection and no restrictions, other than:

– films must be under 6 minutes

– films must be on DVD

– films must include the Kino logo + screening number (53) at the end, just for our screening

– the filmmaker must present the film in person.

Screening slots are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. If you’d like to screen your short drop them a line ASAP at screen@kinolondon.com They’ll need your name, the title and duration of your film, along with your contact details. WANT TO MAKE FILMS WITH THEM? Alongside the open-mic shorts they initiate a new filmmaking project each month that anyone at all can take part in. This month’s team of challengees are in the process of making ‘Reality without the emotion of love’, the results of which shall be pragmatically screened at Kino #53. If you want to take part in August’s challenge session, it’s easy. Just coming along to their screening on 20th August and volunteer. They’ll co-ordinate the team there and then. After that it’s up to you! They’ll also have an extra-special two-week filmmaking challenge between August and September’s screenings. More details about that on the night. If you’ve never made a short, are stuck for an idea, or just want to work with new people, the Kino Challenge is a great way to get those filmmaking juices flowing.

Kino London Are 50!

Believe it or not, Kino London are approaching their 50th screening.

That’s 50 unprogrammed, un-curated, unexpected screenings! They’re not quite sure how they managed to go from one screening to the next with nothing (that’s nothing) programmed, and still end up with a full house each night, but they did! Long may it continue.

Join them for a special birthday screening at the Horse Hospital on Wednesday 8th May. They can guarantee balloons, popcorn, birthday treats and a bumper screening list of shorts, all introduced by their ma…kers.

WANT TO SCREEN AT KINO #50?

As always, filmmakers register in advance to screen their short at each event, sight unseen. There are no themes, no pre-selection and no restrictions, other than:

– films must be under 6 minutes
– films must be on DVD
– films must include the Kino logo + screening number (50) at the end, just for our screening

Alongside the open-mic shorts you’ll see the results of the Kino Challenge film awarded at Kino #49 (‘Pigeons know things’) and there’ll be the chance – as always – to participate in the new session of Challenge filmmaking that will be happening in the month running up to Kino #51.

If you’ve never made a short, or are stuck for an idea, or just want to work with new people, the Kino Challenge is a great way to get those filmmaking juices flowing.

SCI-FI-LONDON 48 Hour Film Challenge

Over the last four years the SCI-FI-LONDON Film Festival has run a 48hour Film Challenge and we have had over 380 films completed, many of which have gone to other film festivals and been broadcast on TV. The challenge takes place a few weeks before the film festival so they can judge all the entries and the winning films can be screened at the festival. The jury this year includes Benedict Cumberbatch (SHERLOCK), Brad Wyman (Producer, MONSTER) and Guillermo Del Toro.

ONLINE REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN

CHALLENGE STARTS 10.00AM, SAT 6 APRIL

Taking part is easy. Get a crew together, scout some locations, prep your cast and be ready to make a 5 minute short film in just 48 hours. They will ask your team to come to the BFI Southbank on Saturday 6 April at 10.00am where they give you the TITLE of the film you will make, some DIALOGUE that one of your characters must say to screen, and a list of PROPS that must be seen in the film. They also give you an optional scientific theme… this could be nano-tech, cloning, gene-splicing…or something a little more “fringe”. Once you have all your elements, you have until Monday morning to return the completed movie to them. You can either deliver it to the BFI or send it via the Internet (wetransfer).

It is free to take part and you just need to register in advance on their site

London Feminist Film Festival – Coming This Week!

The London Feminist Film Festival celebrates feminist filmmakers past and present. The first festival is 29 Nov – 2 Dec 2012.

The London Feminist Film Festival was set up as a response to the underrepresentation of women in the film industry, as well as to the lack of films addressing feminist issues and the fact that the representation of women on screen is often narrow and stereotypical. They want to celebrate women creatives whilst ensuring that this feminist ethos also extends to the films they show. The festival will be a celebration of feminist films past and present. Their aim is to inspire discussion about feminism and film, to support women directors, and to get feminist films seen by a wider audience.

They are pleased to announce the very first London Feminist Film Festival, which will take place at Hackney Picturehouse over the long weekend of 29 November to 2 December 2012. They will be screening feminist shorts and feature films from women directors around the world, including films by up-and-coming directors as well as feminist classics. Each film session will be accompanied by a panel discussion featuring prominent filmmakers, feminists, academics, and arts critics.

General information
Dates: Thursday 29 November to Sunday 2 December 2012
Venue: Hackney Picturehouse, 270 Mare Street, London E8 1HE, UK
